Simon McGovern has 30 years as a martial artist and 16 years as a teacher and coach. Starting off with Karate and Kickboxing as a child, at 16 years old Simon began his training in Jeet Kune Do, Filipino Kali-Escrima-Arnis, and Pentjak Silat with Dave Carnell and Cass Magda. In 2000 he began training in Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu with Lucio 'Lagarto' Rodrigues and Gracie Barra. He is one of the founding coaches of Gracie Barra Stoke. As well as this he trains extensively in Muay Thai with Kru John Wright, Freestyle Wrestling with British Olympic Wrestling Coach Trevor Hoskins and Judo and Russian Sambo with Georgi Georgiev. As a full-time coach at the Impact Martial Arts Academy Simon now splits his training with his coaches.
In the past few years Simon has also competed extensively in Submission Grappling, Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu and Mixed Martial Arts. Simon also referees, judges and commentates on BJJ, Submission Wrestling and Mixed Martial Arts events up and down the country. He also trains the competitive team.
